Humanitarian work marked worldwide on August 19

The second World Humanitarian Day will be marked this year on Thursday, August 19. The day raises awareness of what it means to be a humanitarian aid worker by describing their work, explaining the principles that guide all humanitarians, and portraying the hazards that humanitarian aid workers face in the course of their work.

World Humanitarian Day will also honour those who have been killed or injured in the course of their work. The General Assembly of the United Nations, which established World Humanitarian Day in 2008, invites all countries, United Nations entities and international and non-governmental organizations to observe the day annually, providing an opportunity to increase public support for humanitarian work worldwide.

For more information about World Humanitarian Day, please visit http://ochaonline.un.org/whd/.

You can also watch a YouTube video profiling humanitarian workers in over 40 countries (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojQOyo6lrMQ)

CLWR Sunday Resources now available

Resources to help congregations plan a Sunday worship celebration of the work of CLWR are now available for download from the CLWR website. Resources include worship planning suggestions for both ELCIC and LCC congregations. Included are hymn suggestions, reflections on biblical texts, prayer petitions, a story about a CLWR project in Bolivia, and suggestions for activities within your congregation. Bulletin inserts are also available in three languages: English, Finnish and Chinese.

The ELCIC has designated September 26 as CLWR Sunday while Lutheran Church–Canada has set aside October 17. Congregations not able to celebrate on those Sundays are encouraged to choose an alternate date.

To access CLWR Sunday resources, visit www.clwr.org/Resources/clwrsunday.cfm.

Heavy monsoon rains in Pakistan, which began on July 21, 2010, have caused the worst flooding in at least 80 years, leaving millions of people in need of emergency assistance. The floods, triggered by heavy monsoon rain, have forced 2 million people from their homes and affected about 14 million people. Floods have now inundated hundreds of square kilometers of Asia – from Pakistan’s northwest, to southern coastal states of India - and are likely to worsen.

Canadian Lutheran World Relief (CLWR) is appealing to Canadians for financial support for relief operations underway to assist the people of Pakistan. Funds received by CLWR will be channeled through the ACT Alliance, a 100 member international ecumenical coalition. ACT member Church World Service was on the ground when the floods began is now providing front line emergency food and health aid.

This aid includes distribution of seventy tons of food items in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa which is complete, and an additional 70 tons of food items will be distributed in Allai. Procurement of an additional 490 tons of food items is underway. Health services are being provided as needed. Current flood-related assistance is reaching 155,200 beneficiaries in Khyber Pakthunkhwa and Balochistan.

CLWR is exploring ways of working with Canadian Food Grains Bank which is also active in food distribution in Pakistan.

In order to better respond to the needs of the people of Pakistan, the Government of Canada will match eligible donations made from August 2 until September 12, 2010.

Donations to the appeal may be made through CLWR in the following ways.

3.   By sending a cheque made payable to CLWR to 303-392 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3B 3H6. Please indicate in your correspondence that you wish to contribute to the Pakistan appeal.
